Treatment for TMJ and Bruxism
Do you experience frequent headaches, especially in the morning? Do you suffer from pain, popping, or clicking in your jaw? Do you sometimes have pain in your neck or shoulders? Have you ever experienced your jaw locking open or closed? You may be suffering from a jaw joint disorder known as temporomandibular joint syndrome. The good news is that there are solutions to alleviate your pain and we may be able to help you here at Performance Dental Center.
What is TMJ?
Your temporomandibular joint is one of the body’s most complex hinges, as it allows movement both up and down and side to side. This enables you to yawn, talk, chew, and eat with ease when it’s functioning properly. Different factors can cause your joint to breakdown, such as:
Stress
Clenching and grinding, or bruxism
Injury
Arthritis
Bite misalignment
When your joint is not functioning properly it can be very debilitating, and greatly affect the quality of your life and your overall health.
What is Bruxism?
Many people experience clenching and grinding of their teeth, which typically happens at night. Otherwise known as bruxism, grinding your teeth can cause a host of issues like:
Frequent headaches
Excessive wear, fractures, and other damage to your teeth
TMJ disorder
Jaw pain or tenderness
Dr. Sigman can determine if you’re suffering from bruxism during your routine six-month checkup.

Treatment for TMJ and Bruxism
Custom oral appliances worn at night while you sleep, protect against grinding and clenching. They are often helpful in relaxing the muscles that cause these problems. Over-the-counter bite guards do not provide customization to your specific bite pattern and are often ineffective or even exacerbate symptoms of TMJ disorder. Dr. Sigman understands that every patient is unique and requires an oral appliance or mouth guard that is tailored to their specific needs.
If you or a loved one is suffering from TMJ or bruxism issues, we encourage you to contact our practice today to learn more about how Dr. Sigman can help you.
